Site secured for flagship Collie Green Steel Mill

25 July 2023

CarbonTP is proud to announce that its affiliated entity, Green Steel of WA [GSWA], has taken another significant step forward by securing a site for its flagship 400,000 tonne-per-year green steel mill in Collie.

The site, located adjacent to the Coolangatta Industrial Estate, just outside the town of Collie in Western Australia was chosen for its proximity to road, rail and high voltage electrical infrastructure (with access to zero carbon energy). These attributes, combined with Collie’s highly skilled industrial workforce and Collie’s Transition make it the ideal location for the plant.

This follows the recent award of a $2.7 million funding from the WA Government through the Collie Futures Fund, administered by the Department of Premier of Cabinet (DPC) and the South West Development Commission (SWDC).

The Collie-based green steel recycling mill will convert Western Australian scrap steel into rebar for local and international consumption. The plant will be WA’s first steel mill and Australia’s first green steel mill.

In addition to creating a credible opportunity for the transition of one of WA’s coal and industrial townships, the project is the company’s first step towards creating a genuine steel manufacturing industry in Western Australia. GSWA is committed to working with local businesses and contractors to ensure the local economy and community benefits from this project.

Green Steel of WA has secured a technology partnership with global steelmaking leader Danieli, which has been providing innovative steelmaking solutions around the world for more than 100 years. During this time, Danieli has delivered more than 100 turnkey plants, giving them unparalleled experience in this field.
